By the time this edition comes out, the celebrations of the Queen’s 90th birthday will be over and the result of the EU Referendum would be known. Whatever the outcome of the referendum, there are turbulent times ahead for our country, something of a contrast with the last few weeks when the Queen’s birthday celebrations seemed to bring people together. Let us hope that there will be a gracious acceptance of the verdict of the people and that our politicians will show a willingness to ‘seek the common good’ in the months to come.
Even as I am finalising this edition, comes the tragic news of the murder of Jo Cox MP in the midst of doing her constituency duties. Everyone seems to agree that she was a dedicated MP, totally committed to fighting poverty and injustice in the world, and always seeing the best in people: a ‘perfect human being’ as her sister described her. She will be such a loss to Parliament and the nation, but the depth of the loss to her family and her two young children is immeasurable. We pray that they will be able to move on, sustained by memories of her and the support of all who love them.
Earlier this month Slough Borough Council published their “emerging Local Plan for Slough 2016-2036”. This was a joint enterprise between Heathrow and local authorities of Slough, South Bucks, Windsor and Maidenhead. As our readers know, Around Langley has had a focus on our environment this year and it is of concern that several Langley sites have been identified for potential development, which will reduce our green spaces even more. The larger sites are between the railway station and the canal, near Market Lane and Sutton Lane, as well as Bloom Park, which is of great recreational value for the residents and where the annual Canal Festival takes place. The consultation period relating to the results of their existing Call for Sites (presented on the website below) and ‘other potential Local Plan sites’ ends on 15th July. The decision to go ahead with the development will depend critically on the decision on the third runway which has been promised in July. www.slough.gov.uk/ council/strategies-plans-and-policies/the-emerging-local-plan-for-slough-2016- 2036.aspx
The GCSE and higher examinations will be over by now and schools will be closing for the Summer holidays soon. Around Langley also will have a break as usual in August. Maybe some of our readers would like to join in with Holiday at Home (Page 4) or enjoy the Langley Carnival (Page 7). We wish all our readers a happy holiday, whether they go far or stay near. Page 3
